Critical Thinking Questions - Made by Akshave Arulparan

  1. Describe Pip and Mrs. Joe’s relationship throughout the novel.
  2. What role does Miss Havisham play in the novel?
  3. Miss Havisham confesses to Pip that she adopted Estella, in order to “save her (Estella) from misery like my own." Do you think this is true? Why or why not?
  4. Why do you think Miss Havisham manipulates Pip into thinking she is his secret benefactor?
  5. Why does Pip's attitude towards Magwitch change?

  1. 3. I think this is true. This is because Ms. Havisham fell for a man who she thought loved her back and since Ms. Havisham herself was deeply in love she thought that they would so end their lives together. Instead it turned out that the man was tricking her all along and she was never able to get over that even after all those years that passed by. Due to this she probably wanted to protect Estella from the same thing that she went through since she said that she cared for the child from the first moment she saw Estella and because Estella was pretty and would inherit the fortune that Ms. Havisham had, she probably wanted to make sure that Estella would not suffer the same way. You can also tell that this is true because in the book, Ms. Havisham wanted Pip to fall for Estella and love her forever so that Estella would not get hurt by a man but didn't mind if he got hurt by her. Another proof that she cared was that Estella said the Ms. Havisham had made her uncaring and heart, the way she was, so Ms. Havisham probably was trying to do it for Estella's own good and so that she wouldn't be easily tricked or fooled the same way she was.
